Basic Salsa for Beginners

Participants will learn basic Salsa steps, turns, dips, etc... Classes will consist of a group warm-up to learn the basic steps & turns, partnering skills, leading & folowing skills, simple turn patterns, style & technique tips, and how to use the music. Participants will rotate partners during each class so that everyone gets a chance to dance often regardless of whether or not we have an even number of males & females.

Our philosophy is to spread the joy of movement to the beat of Latin music, as well as to create new friendships among participants and to give a taste of Latin culture to those who have never experienced the FUN! Salsa dancing is a great way to make new friends & get some excercise! Participants should wear comfortable shoes that are leather soled or smooth on the bottom to allow turning. Sneakers generally stick to the floor too much and limit movement. Flip-flops or other sandals that are not strapped to the ankle are not good for dancing. They tend to come off easily while dancing. High heels are not recommended for beginners. Participants should wear clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in. Salsa dancing will make you sweat, so participants should dress in clothing that is not too warm.

Salsa Casino Rueda

Salsa Casino Rueda is a Cuban Salsa street dance, similar to American Square dancing. The dance is done in a circle to up-beat Salsa music. The caller calls out random turn patterns which are done in sync with the other dancers, & the ladies get passed around the circle so that everyone gets to dance with everyone. This dance is just as much fun to watch as it is to do! As few as two couples, or as many couples as can fit onto a dance floor can do this type of dance together. An even number of males & females are needed for this type of dance. Because we usually have more females than males show up for class, it's a good idea for females to try to find a partner to bring to class with them, but not required.

Each class consists of a general warm-up with basic steps, a review of last week's material, and usually a new turn pattern each week. Participants learn the name of each turn pattern and the hand sign associated with it so that  the caller can communicate with the dancers even in a loud club or party setting. This type of dance is really good exercise for the mind AND the body! It is like a game as much as a dance to see who can remember all the turn patterns that the caller will instruct the dancers to do.
